(Not a review, just some notes to help me remember the things I've read. But written this way because it's the Internet, and some people will stumble across this page.)
When the library let me know that this audiobook was available, I put it on hold. I downloaded it not too long after that. The series has fans.
I was unaware of the history of this book. In fact, I just looked it up. I was a little confused at the time but I didn't think much about it.
The cover had Charles E. Gannon's name in big letters even though I thought it was an anthology. I couldn't see on the thumbnail that there were three other names, because this book is an anthology of sorts. It's a called a "braided novel" and complains three novellas written by the other three authors.
In fact, this isn't the book that I thought it was. This is the third book in the series.
Here's the summary from the Library page:
"Major Rodger Y. Murphy should have died when his helicopter crashed off the coast of Mogadishu in 1993. Instead, he woke up in 2125, 152 light-years from home. Murphy and 100 other "Lost Soldiers" have been retrieved and awakened by two officers of the Consolidated Terran Republic: Trevor Corcoran and Richard Downing. Promising to return, Corcoran and Downing leave the twentieth-century castaways with a daunting objective: establish a base of operations on the main world of R'Bak using local allies they have yet to recruit and enemy equipment they have yet to seize. They haven't been back yet. But the company of misfits and ne'er-do-wells who've taken the nickname Murphy's Lawless rise to the challenge!"
I can't add much more for a couple of reasons. First, I listened to this at least a month or more ago. I might've even listened to it twice. And there were a lot of things going on for me to keep track of while I'm walking, so this might not have been a good choice for an auidobook.
I basically remember the intelligent animals that they rode like horses to get around, and I remember dealing with a native race trying to get what they could from them, but otherwise, it was a band of misfits re-awakened from the 20th century, sent into space to land on a planet and do a job. The best and brightest of the reawakened soldiers went off with Corcoran and Downing (which are names I recognize from the main series).
I enjoy the main series, and this was fun to listen to, but I really didn't absorb it. And now that I know where it comes in the sequence, I probably won't read it unless I read a lot more first. The main book I'm up to isn't available from the library as an ebook. I have it as a paperback and it's sitting on my dresser. It's just that I have so many paper books to read, less time, and poorer eyesight than I used to have.
